News in brief...

Welcome
The Environment Agencies Trout and Grayling Fisheries strategy will soon be implemented. Its aim is to conserve and improve wild stocks of Trout, Sea Trout and Grayling throughout England and Wales. The strategy will affect Esthwaite as it is an in-line Stillwater and has the potential to boost the wild trout recruitment within the catchment. For this reason Esthwaite is classed as ‘native water’ and from 2009 will become a Brown Trout only fishery, stocking only non breeding triploid fish.Sport will be kept to a high standard. It will be business as usual and Esthwaite will continue as a top class loch style fishery! For more information on the strategy log onto www.environment-agency.gov.uk.
Climate change is on everyone’s mind at present and who can blame them, with the mysterious weather patterns that we have experienced in recent years. Last seasons weather was no exception with higher than average rainfall and a freak heat wave during March. Despite this numbers of anglers visiting the venue were up and the level of sport was fantastic with a rod average of 4.5 fish per return. There was no dip in catch per unit effort during the summer when surface temperatures get close to the lethal limit for trout. It really did fish well!
Angler recruitment is high priority at Esthwaite Water and throughout 2008 we will continue to run free tuition days and offer qualified instruction. Our junior pond will be open and stocked daily. Also discounted tickets for youngsters and deals for novices will continue to be on offer. If you would like to help us with our busy tuition programme please do not hesitate to get in touch.
Angling Writers Award
Congratulations to local angling writer, instructor and guide Patrick Arnold for winning The Local Newspaper Writer of the Year Award for 2007. This is a national award and Patrick would like to say a big thank you to his partner Jill for all her hard work behind the scenes!

Esthwaite Lands The Big One
Last summer the fishery staged the biggest competition in its 27 year history. The inaugral Jack Charlton disabled cup competition was contested by over 50 anglers of varying disabilities from both boat and bank. This any method match consisted of many categories and prizes, with the overall winner, Richard Walker weighing in 4 trout weighing 9lb 14oz.

The competition was kindly sponsored by local business man, Brian Scowcroft and The Kingmoor Charitable Trust. The event is set to be firmly established in Esthwaite's events calendar. The date for 2008 will be released in the spring!

Tackle giants Masterline who sponsor the fishery have kindly offered to co sponsor the Esthwaite Open Pairs competition. Along with Shakespeare, they will be donating some fabulous prizes to make the competition even more popular for the future.
What a Result!
Mike Laycock, Esthwaite's representative at the Troutmaster's final 2007 finished a credible 3rd overall, competing against 150 other anglers at Grafham Water. Our entrants in the competition are edging closer every year to the coveted title of Troutmaster champion. Well done Mike!
Stock Fence
A new screen has been erected on Cunsey Beck at the south end of the lake. The barrier will prevent Rainbow Trout from venturing down into the river, to potentially breed. It will be removed in 2011 to enable movement of migratory fish into and out of the lake. By which time Rainbow Trout stocks left in the lake will have dwindled. This action is due to the Environment agencies Trout and Grayling Strategy!
